FANUC America Introduces Innovative Learning Software To Enhance Speed and Performance of Pick and Place Robots at Pack Expo 2013
FANUC America Corporation Posted 09/23/2013ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – FANUC America Corporation will introduce Genkotsu Learning Control (GLC), an innovative learning software designed to enhance the speed and performance of the M-3iA series of parallel-link “Genkotsu” robots during Pack Expo 2013, Sept. 23-25 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV in booth #4742.
FANUC’s patented GLC software improves robot performance by learning the unique properties of the application and then optimizing the robot motion performance for the specific application.
“GLC uses iterative learning techniques to optimize the speed and motion performance of our M-3iA Genkotsu robots,” said Rob Totten, application engineer, FANUC America. “Motion times can be reduced by up to 10%, all while keeping the robot duty within an acceptable range – something less-advanced speedup methods are unable to achieve.”
At the show, a FANUC M-3iA/6S four-axis robot equipped with GLC will pick boxes of chocolate three at a time from a line-tracked in-feed conveyor and pack them into a fixed station case at very high speeds. A push button will allow attendees to disable GLC to observe the process at slower speeds. The robot with GLC enabled will show a significant improvement in throughput compared to the non-GLC mode, all while maintaining its path and FANUC’s legendary reliability.
“The demonstration uses FANUC’s new iRPickTool software which simplifies setup for line tracking systems and minimizes programming for customers with picking applications,” said Jessica Beltran, product manager, FANUC America. “We’re also using the new ROBOGUIDE/iRPickPRO software, which allows customers to simulate visual tracking systems with multiple robots for testing and validating real-world scenarios on a PC.”
FANUC M-3iA robot
The M-3iA robot is a larger version of the company’s M-1iA and new M-2iA “Genkotsu” robots. Available in a three, four or six-axis model, the M-3iA offers the same unique parallel-link structure, and accommodates payloads up to 12kg. In addition, it has the largest work envelope of any robot in its class (1350mm x 500mm).
“The M-3iA is ideal for both simple and complex assembly of electronics, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, office supplies, consumer products, and solar panels,” said Beltran.
The M-3iA six-axis model has a three-axis wrist for complex assembly tasks. The extreme flexibility offered by the three-axis wrist enables the robot to pick up and insert parts at simple or compound angles, and twist parts into place, similar to the flexibility offered by a manual operator.
The four-axis M-3iA has a single-axis wrist for simple assembly and high-speed picking operations, offering speeds up to 4000 degrees per second. In addition, a hollow wrist allows hoses and cables to be routed internally, which minimizes wear and tear on the tooling cables.
A three-axis M-3iA has up to 12kg payload and offers higher throughput when the applications do not require orientation control of the product.
The M-3iA, like all FANUC robots, operates with the company’s latest R-30iB Controller with integrated intelligent functions such as iRVision, Force Sensing, Robot Link, and Collision Guard.
