Stäubli Corporation’s Support Allows USC Upstate to Expand Robotics Offerings

Spartanburg, S.C. – 11- 15- 2007 – In 2002, the Stäubli Corporation, located in Duncan S.C., was instrumental in the creation of a robotics laboratory at the University of South Carolina Upstate with an equipment donation of six robotic arms valued approximately at $275,000. Since its inception, the University’s computer science department, under the leadership of Dr. Sebastian van Delden, assistant professor of computer science, has expanded its robotics offerings in the lab to include robotics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and directed research related course.
“Students gain hands-on working knowledge of industrial robotics and factory automation as well as an understanding of the theoretical and mathematically underpinnings of the science behind the machines,” said van Delden.
Technical papers resulting from faculty and student research projects in the lab have been published in peer-reviewed conferences, including recent papers in the fifth IEEE International Workshop on Robotic and Sensors Environments and the 18th IEEE International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence.
Stäubli recently announced its continued collaboration with USC Upstate by supporting faculty and student research initiatives and dissemination outlets. Stäubli committed funds to support research disseminations outlets at USC Upstate, becoming the Gold Sponsor of the USC Upstate Annual Research Symposium. This Symposium provides a forum that brings together faculty, student, and industry researchers from numerous disciplines in the Upstate to share ideas and promote future collaborations. The 2008 Symposium will be held on Friday, April 11 and will likely include:
- Participation from faculty and students at Converse College and Wofford College
- Keynote speeches from Ingo Angermeier, president and CEO of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System; Dr. Rosemarie Booze, vice president of research at USC; and Dr. Michael Dorcas, associate professor of biology and accomplished research grant winner at Davidson College
- High school student groups from Spartanburg Day School, Oakbrook Preparatory, Boiling Springs High School, and Spartanburg High School
In addition to providing financial support for the Annual Research Symposium, Stäubli also has also committed funds to support the creation of a USC Upstate Undergraduate Research Journal which will feature student first-authored research papers and be distributed to regional high schools and businesses.
“USC Upstate students will gain value knowledge by experiencing the process of publishing a research article, and high school students in the region who read the Journal will learn more about some of the exciting current research projects that include students at USC Upstate,” explained van Delden.
Stäubli recently donated a new RS20/CS8C robotic manipulator as a continuation of its support to robotics research and teaching capabilities at USC Upstate. This new robotic arm features the latest state-of-the-art software and hardware currently being integrated into factory automation tasks. It is a compact machine that can be mounted on a moveable platform so that it can be easily transported to other classrooms across campus or to off-campus events.
“The success of a university depends in large part on support and collaborations with regional industries,” said van Delden. “It is very exciting to see such strong interest from companies like Stäubli to support research and scholarly activities at USC Upstate.”
