Monday AM Workshops (concurrent)


New!W1 - Using Robots to Improve Safety and Market Position   9:00 a.m.

Bob Rochelle from Kawasaki Robotics leads you through the world of industrial automation explaining the many useful ways that robotics can be used to automate your applications.  Issues will include what to expect as you move forward in an automation project, how to cost justify your investment, the basic safety concerns and how you can respond to them in a cost-effective manner. 

W2 - Introduction to Risk Assessment 
  9:00 a.m.
Bruce Main from design safety engineering will lead a session exploring risk assessment as presented in The new ISO 12100 (ISO 14121) standard with emphasis on robotic installations.  Risk Assessment is a key element in the ISO robot standard and the new R15.06 standard.  This review will include examples of methodologies from both commercial sources and National and International standards.  Join this class for a comprehensive understanding of the concept of risk assessment as it applies to industrial safety, and as a foundation for more detailed risk assessment discussions throughout the safety conference.

New!Introducing the New R15.06 Robot Safety Standard
Roberta Nelson Shea, Chair of the R15.06 committee, will introduce you to the first public release of the draft for the new R15.06 (2011) which will include the ANSI/RIA/ISO 10218-1-2007 and the ISO 10218-2.  She will also inform you on progress of the ISO robot safety standard and offer safety hints for your installations and ways to ensure compliance with all safety standards as we transition to a new understanding of safety requirements. 

New!Part 1 – The Manufacturer’s Perspective
Join members of the ISO and R15.06 committees as they introduce you to Part 1 of the new standard - the requirements for the robot.  ANSI/RIA/ISO 10218-1-2007 will be replaced by the new standard and include changes made to the ISO 10218-1.  Hear what the manufacturer thinks about the new robot safety standard and get their safety hints for your installations.

New!Part 2 – The User’s Perspective
Join members of the ISO and R15.06 committees as they introduce you to Part 2 of the new standard - the requirements for the robot system and integration.  The new R15.06 will include the ISO 10218-2 which addresses the requirements for building and installing robot systems and the unique North American requirements that are added for the user.  Hear what the user thinks about the new robot safety standard and get their safety hints for implementing the standard in your installations.

An OSHA View on Robot Safety

OSHA compliance officer Aaron Priddy will review the latest trends and activities of OSHA with attention to the top safety failures and reasons for citations, particularly as they relate to robot installations.  The answer to the question “Does OSHA use R15.06?” is yes, and here you can learn how.  Also discussed will be how you can actively participate with OSHA to ensure a safe work environment in your place of employment.

Selecting Safeguards

Roberta Nelson Shea, longtime safety equipment advocate, will guide you through the myriad of safeguarding devices available today, with highlights on their benefits as well as their shortcomings, so you can make the best possible guarding choices for your robot applications.  This will set the stage for your viewing of safeguard devices offered by a selection of vendors.

W3 – Risk Assessment Exercise Using R15.06 (AM)   8:30 a.m. (Registration & Continental Breakfast 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.)
Jeff Fryman from the RIA will lead you in an interactive lesson in conducting a risk assessment of a typical robot cell with emphasis on employing the methodology for risk assessment as found in the R15.06.  This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of the important concept of risk assessment and uses a “hands-on” approach to practice the methodology.

W4 - Essential Safety Controls  (AM)  8:30 a.m.
Led by Gil Dominguez from Pilz Automation Safety and noted controls engineer, our team of highly qualified instructors will guide you through a basic understanding of the needs and concepts of safety controls for automated machinery and robots using a building block approach.  This fast-paced workshop requires a good understanding of the basics of controls design as you are guided from the risk assessment results, through design schematics to a conclusion in proper installation of typical safeguarding devices.

W5 - Practical Industrial Robot Safety  (FULL-DAY SESSION ONLY)  8:30 a.m.
We have assembled an international team of noted safety experts who will guide you through a review of the new requirements in the standard and the information presented during the week.  This will help you in understanding and applying safety concepts in any robot, automated or integrated manufacturing system you may be working on.  This exercise will feature demonstrations using actual equipment to help understanding and working the safety distance formula for installing safeguarding devices. Included will be an effective method to measure machine stopping time and discussions of requirements from USA, CSA and ISO machinery safety standards.  This is an all-day workshop.

New!W6 – Contextual Risk Assessment (PM)  1:00 p.m.
Join Mike Douglas from General Motors as he explains the successful method for employing Risk Assessment used by that leading auto maker.  Risk Assessment is a cornerstone of the new R15.06 robot safety standard and you will want to understand some of the many methodologies that are available for you to use.

W7 - Primer on Functional Safety  (PM)  1:00 p.m.
Join Ian Brough, SICK, Inc. and others for an in-depth look at the requirements and impact of the new ISO 13849-1:2006 standard for parts of safety control systems and how the controls engineer will be able to meet the requirements of functional safety on robots and automated equipment.  Included will be group exercises in the practical calculation of Performance Levels as well as the aids being made available to the machine designer.
