Safety Questions

Question Asked:

I am installing a new robot on an injection molding machine that only has an SPi 12 interface. The controls on the machine will not support dual channel safety. How can install the robot and still be within standards?

Hello Shane - first of all what brand robot are you installing? Is it a 6-axis or a Wittmann style injection mold robot? You can use a safety PLC as an add-on to the automation cell that would allow you to provide the necessary dual-channel safety. Banner makes the SC-22 series safety controller that has dual channel capability. Please feel free to reach out to me direct: Hope this information is useful? Let me know and have a productive day. A Serial Peripheral interface is not safety rated and cannot satisfy the requirements for integration of your robot. Are you absolutely sure there are no spare safety-related outputs from the molding machine for interface to additional equipment?

Shane, Without the absence of dual channel safety circuits there is no way to make your system fully comply with either the ANSI/RIA R15.06-1999 or 2012 standards..
