There is no requirement they be painted. Materials are selected dependent on the environmental requirements, e.g. for food processing related systems you might choose stainless steel and polycarbonates for washdown and prevention of bacterial growth. The color black, for wire mesh is used to enhance visibility for process observation. The color orange has been used for posts and frames, sometimes even mesh, of doors to clearly facilitate identification of their location.
