The Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) has recently released its 2017 Top 10 Most Cited Violations for the fiscal year October 1, 2016 through September 30, 2017. This list is published annually by OSHA to raise awareness for both employers and employees regarding the most cited and dangerous workforce hazards. Below is OHSA's Top 10 list with the Rank, Regulation, Code and Number of violations cited.

#2 Hazard Communication | 1910.12 | 4,652
#3 Scaffolding | 1910.451 | 3,697

#9 Fall Protection/Training | 1910.503 | 1,724
#10 Electrical/Wiring Methods | 1910.305 | 1,503
Over the last four years the Top 5 most cited violations have remained in the exact same order as follows: (1) Fall Protection, (2) Hazard Communication, (3) Scaffolding, (4) Respiratory Protection and (5) Lockout/Tagout.
MACHINE GUARDING has risen from #10 to #8 on the list with 2,109 violations in 2017. This quick rise to #8 in a relatively short period of time indicates there is much work that needs to be done in providing the proper protection for workers exposed to machinery. The Top 10 list is a great tool that can help employers remain vigilant in their focus and responsibility to provide a safe work environment for employees. OSHA has made it clear that workplace safety enforcement is one of its top priorities considering the 78% increase in the agency's penalties that went into effect August 1, 2016.
