Automation Engineer II

The Automation Engineer II will work with a small R&D team in Dallas to produce an industry leading Mobile Robotic solution for the Material Handling Industry. They will utilize the latest technologies to integrate robotics into material handling systems for complex applications. This includes R&D and prototype development to successfully bring new products to market. The process involves understanding the customer's goals and objectives, and developing engineered solutions to meet these goals. 

Technologies used in this position include low level automation, 2D and 3D machine vision, optical devices, specialty conveyors, robotics, end of arm tooling, safety systems, and simulation. The Automation Engineer will be capable of executing all phases of a controls project including: concept and research, sales support, estimating, component selection, network design, panel design, ACAD layout, device troubleshooting, PLC/PC control programming, HMI development, on site installation and debug, and after sales support. The Automation Engineer will cross-train as required in robotic programming.

Travel Requirements: Up to 40% of time spent

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Conduct full scope of controls project services as outlined in the overview above
  • Assist Robotic and Mechanical Engineering on project design
  • Create Functional Specifications documents
  • With little guidance deliver successful controls projects with regards to customer satisfaction, schedule, time, and budget
  • With little guidance engineering issues as they arise by working closely with the engineering team, vendors, and the shop
  • Ensure we meet and exceed our customer's expectations through superior design and implementation
  • Complete all administrative tasks/paperwork in timely manner
  • Work with management to prioritize projects on macro level; ability to prioritize individual tasks on your own
  • Communicate strategic information regarding suppliers, customers, and competition
  • Support installs and FAT and SAT testing
  • Develop recommended spare parts lists for the equipment manual once project is completed
  • Work with management to develop process standards within the department
  • Attend training and become certified in applicable controls technologies or programs
  • Attend weekly systems/sales meetings and other scheduled meetings on time
  • Support patent searches and applications

Minimum Education & Experience

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Electrical, Computer or Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis in Robotics and/or mechatronics
  • 2-5 years of controls experience in an Automation role and on highly automated projects
  • PE certification preferred , but not required
  • Experience and knowledge of electrical products offered by divisions
  • Intermediate design knowledge of all electrical and mechanical products offered by division
  • Intermediate knowledge of mobile platforms, PLC, industrial robots, circuits, motors and encoders, power, pneumatics, hydraulics, networks, batteries, and safety systems
  • Advanced experience with PLC’s and Industrial Robots
  • Has worked with safety rated equipment, networking, circuits, AC/DC motors, encoders, conveyor belts, LIDARs, photoeyes, and Panel Design
  • Experience with different stages of product development
