How Artificial Intelligence Will Increase the Performance and Capabilities for Autonomous Mobile Robots

In the past, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been more of a buzzword than a value driver in industry, but with recent advancements in sensor technology, cloud computing, and AI-focused processor architectures AI is now capable of adding value to the products used in industry.

Today, Machine Learning Algorithms used for visual detection and recognition have evolved to a point where wide market adoption has become viable. For AMR technology, this means we can now detect and classify objects from camera data. This allows robots to more efficiently and appropriately react to different types of obstacles within the environment.

AI-powered AMRs will help turn workplaces into organic, data-driven environments, in which robots share relevant data from onboard and remote sensors to help fleets of robots make informed decisions. Combining Artificial Intelligence with Cloud Computing and the adoption of the 5G network architecture will power the next industrial revolution by fully supplanting undesirable, laborious, and dangerous tasks.

Autonomous mobile manipulation is the integration of autonomous mobile robots and manipulator devices along with vision components into systems that can perform meaningful work in dynamic work environments. This presentation will cover:

In this presentation, we will review the challenges of designing and developing a mobile manipulator for the purposes of unloading trucks, trailers and shipping containers in the retail/distribution markets. Designing a robotic solution has enough challenges and when adding mobility to the equation, the issues can add up exponentially. This presentation will cover these challenges and how Honeywell Robotics has developed a unique robotic unloading solution that is capable of unloading a wide range of products autonomously.

Roadmaps and Roadblocks for AMRs in Logistics

With nearly 15 million packages being delivered every day, FedEx uses numerous types of equipment to get a package from Point A to Point B. Each year FedEx buys close to 5,000 new pieces of powered transportation to make sure that packages makes it on time. In those nearly 5,000 new pieces of equipment, new AMRs are joining the FedEx fleet each year. Aaron Prather will talk about some of the AMRs that have joined the FedEx fleet and where he sees areas of opportunity for the AMR industry as FedEx and other Logistic firms continue to grow their AMR fleet.

MHS can demonstrate multiple autonomous mobile robots performing different package delivery scenarios.

Parcel Singulator:
The MHS Parcel Singulator transforms a bulk flow of packages into a manageable single-file array for downstream sorting systems. The MHS Parcel Singulator operates with no manual intervention, a completely automated solution that provides 99.85% singulation accuracy.

Conveyor Shoe Sorter:
Shoe sortation provides a very soft and efficient way to divert parcels quickly. Shoe sorters can be used in applications where there is a wide variety of product sizes, shapes and weights being sorted.

Package Induction:
MHS’s R&D Group has explored automating this task with collaborative robots. Automatic pick and place from a parcel conveyor can be demonstrated at induction points.
